For me being an expat is rather the way of thinking and not the status. You are probably belong to that some hundred thousands international crowd feeling like at home anywhere in the world.

I don't think that many expats happy about being expats. Due to their profession or other circumstances they are forced to move overseas rather than settle down somewhere. So, yes they might feel like at home abroad but are still dreaming about more stable life.

I think the first few years in a career people are excited about business travel and moving abroad.   After a decade the energy for this sort of thing waivers considerably.  Being an expat traveling every few years to follow jobs can destroy relationships and make settling down very difficult.
As you say Maker, getting a stable life is a dream of many expats and if you live in a foreign country with children and not many good friends, then life can be stressful.
Most expats are economic migrants, here for the money and career opportunities as opposed to being here for starting a family.

Exactly, you phrased it very good. We are economic migrants here. But I see myself coming back to the lovely quite place where I grew up when I will become a pensioner.

Everyone who lives in Munich has a choice to move out to the country side, where it is more quiet and not so expensive. That is the beauty of Munich: the city is only in 15 S-Bahn min. from suburbs.

If you plan to work in Munich and live in suburbs, it could cost you lots of nerves and time to cope with S-Bahn delays and traffic jams. There is nearly every day something happens.

I think expats, with their decent salary, can effort themselves to rent a flat in the city and not i suburbs. You can try to find first smth. for 6 month or 1 year to stay and then search for better variants.
