Where do I get the train to Saltzburg in Munich? HBF? How much will this cost and how long does it take to get there? Thank you.

You can go to Salzburg with a Bayern ticket which costs 29€ for 5 people. The bayern ticket cannot be used on the express trains so it takes about 1h30ß2h on the regular train.

How on earth do I identify an express train? Is it one of these ICE trains? I am not experienced at travel within Europe, so excuse me if this is a stupid question.

ICE, railjet and the like are all express change. Basic rule of thumb is if the train is shiney then it's express, if it looks like it was last washed in the 70s then its a regular train.

You can actually find this out at http://www.bahn.de where you choose the language (English) and search for your train and time. Regular train marked as RB and ICE is express train.

Ah, but does it tell you everything you need to know about "The Sound of Music", which was set in Salzburg... I think I believe they even have tours of the famous places connected with the musical.

What is there in Salzburg worth seeing/doing (besides the Sound of Music tour)? Ok, the city looks good on postcards, but is there really anything there to distinguish it from any other German/Austrian city? I can understand visiting Rome, or Vienna, Paris or Cannes - but Salzburg? Maybe I am just ignorant of the city and there is lots and lots to see and do.

Sure, Salzburg first of all is popular of its classical music that you can hear everywhere there. But another thing which distinguishes Salzburg from German cities is nicely dressed up people, as if everybody is going to or coming back from theater or concert. I should admit that the dress sense of Austrian people is better than that of Germans.

Hey Kitty, I think it really depends on which part of the city you would prefer to stay in. There are some good hostels but they may be quite busy for the time period you mentioned.
As an alternative, what about finding a female travel companion and getting a two-bed cheap hotel instead?

Hi Kitty, there are many hostels in Munich. Do you have any criteria, price range etc? Then even have B&B type things here called 'pensions' which you can use. I have heard of a good hostel near the main train station in Munich (Hauptbahnhof is the station). I can find out details for you if you like?
Do let us know when exactly you are coming and you can join some of us for drinks perhaps. In fact maybe someone could even put you up for a few days and you can avoid the hostels completely.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your kindness, I would be greatful if you can provide me the details in Munich, my budget is ard 20-25 euro per night, and would be best if near to station then i wouldn't be rushing here and there.

OK Kitty, I will find out some details tonight. If I were going to spend a few days in Munich I would be tempted to find a place near to Marienplatz instead of Hauptbanhof. Though the latter is the main train station, it is not the closest to the main trendy areas and shopping areas. Marienplatz is a better choice. Also, as with most main train stations, you tend to get the less than wholesome type hanging around. Munich is very safe and clean, so there is nothing to worry about HBF, but it is right next to the sex area of Munich.
The two areas you will probably want to hang around in are Schwabing and Haidhausen. They have plenty of bars and restaurants, are lively and arty. They are also near the main tourist parts of the city.
Munich is lovely and peaceful, everywhere is good to find a place to stay, so don't let my comments deflect you from where you prefer to stay. How long do you wish to stay here?

Hi Kitty, sorry for the delay, I forgot to paste this info here. Check out: http://www.easypalace.de/english/index.htmlThe location is Hauptbanhof, but heading towards Karlsplatz. Karlsplatz is the start of the main shopping area and a nice place to stay. Schwabing and Haidhausen are not too far away. The other city-centre hostels all seem to be nearer the seedier side of Hauptbanhof. The link I sent you is in a slighter more convenient and reputable area. Again I must emphasize that all areas of Munich are safe, so do not let me put you off getting any other hostel. Good luck.
