I am planning on getting away for two weeks this autumn. I am not too concerned where I go as long as it is interesting and warm. Would any of you have personal recommendations of a good place to visit for two weeks? I am not interested in sitting on a beach getting skin cancer, more into doing things and walking around, calling into cafe's, that sort of thing.

Egypt. Loads to see and do there. From an unrivaled history to great outdoor sports, monuments, bazaars and all sorts of exotic treats. Hard to beat. Plus it has great weather.

How about Munich? Your near to the alps and the bavarian forest if you want to go walking. The climate is reasonably mild in the autumn and lots of cafes and plenty of things.

Hi Thunderod, I'll analyze the southern-european option for you.
Greek islands: since you'll have 2 full weeks choose one of the big ones. Crete, Rhodes, Naxos. They are all spectacular landscape-wise, their climate in autumn is unbeatable and have plenty of cafe and bar life to keep you entertained. Alternatively, do a 2 week Cyclades tour which would mean visiting 3-4 of the smaller ones in the Aegean sea. Prices are considerably better in autumn too. Malta: brilliant for very similar reasons to the Greek islands in autumn with the added effect that Malta is very accomodating to English speaking people as most of its tourist industry is aimed at the British public. Big enough to keep you easily going for 2 weeks. Canary islands: It will probably feel like a mild summer rather than autumn, as the Canary islands have a steady yearly temperature averaging at 20-25C. Plenty of choice there, but choose Lanzarotte. Barcelona:You might wanna go for the urban option without jeopardising any of the features mentioned above except maybe for landscape. Barcelona is one helluva pretty city and ideal if you want to do some serious chilling while at a warm climate and by the sea. If you decide to go for any of these places let me know as I've been to all of them and can help ya with more than a few tips.

The thing that would put me off the Greek islands is the tourists. I am guessing you would get a lot of rowdy foreigners ruining the tranquility?

In autumn? No, you would not. Besides, any of the aforementioned places would have tons of tourists during the summer. The Greek islands do not have any exclusivity in that. But we are talking autumn so it's an entirely different case and it applies for all these places. The best time to visit southern Europe is either spring or autumn.

Thanks for the tip. I do not think I am alone in wanting to avoid tourist hotspots for certain nationalities. No offence intended to any one nation, but stag parties and teenage holiday places do not make for a great holiday. Sorry, I hijacked the thread.

Didnt hijack anything, Peter It was a legitimate concern, and one that Thunderod probably has too (rightfully so). You actually enhanced the thread.

I would go for couple of days to Barcelona or Rome myself. A friend of mine visited both cities last year and was full of good impressions.

At what websites are you looking for good holidays that are decent quality and and too expensive? There are so many of them to compare but you never know whom to trust.

I often use Hotelbewertungen from holidaycheck.de, they might help you if you speak German.

I have just thought that to find a good holiday destination you may not go too far from Munich. It is a shame that I don't know places in Alps or Bavarian Forest where other people coming from abroad enjoy their holidays.

Hi ThunderRod
Would you be willing to go further afield?
I can really recommend Cuba, and many countries in central and South America (all depends on what your goals are)

Glad to brought those countries up. I was thinking of visiting Peru this year. Ever been there? The problem is I think they recently experienced a run of bad weather with some tourist destinations experiencing floods. I am not sure how suitable the conditions would be to visit there this summer.
I heard Cuba is nice. Do tourists have enough freedom there?

Cuba is very Safe, as a Woman I never felt intimidated or threatened as there is a very large police presence, and people are very helpful
That being said I would also try never to place myself into a position that could be dangerous either.
On the Peru front, I have never been, however its a place on my agenda to visit. If you go first maybe you could provide some tips
